Neighboring in November with ELL
Oct 26, 2023 |
The hallowed halls of FUMC Hurst are filled with activity each Saturday morning as over 50 neighbors gather to take English classes with English Language Learning (ELL), a collaboration of FUMC Hurst and White’s Chapel Methodist Church. Refugees and other immigrants from places like Egypt, Ukraine, Afghanistan, South Korea, Congo, and Venezuela who now live nearby come hungry to learn.
Come grab a cup of coffee or tea and have a chat about current events, gardening, music, food, or whatever interests you with an eager adult from another culture at the Conversation & Literacy Café each Saturday from 9-9:50 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. There’s no long-term commitment, just come and share.
Or, if shopping is your passion, help arrange and price new and gently used donations at the semi-annual ELL SuperStar Store open to our students. We will be prepping donations on Thursday, November 9, from 1-3 p.m. and Saturday, November 11, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. You’re also welcome to help ELL students shop, count their SuperStar dollars, and
pay for items they “buy” on Saturday, November 11, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Purchases are made solely in exchange for SuperStar currency, which serves as an incentive for on-time attendance, participation, and extra work in their classes.
Come meet these neighbors from diverse cultures, welcome them, and help build community in Jesus’ name.
