SouperBowl Challenge

    Feb 7, 2020 | by Pat McDaniel

Walking is my preferred choice of exercise. I enjoy a little bit of nature, stay close to home and no matter where I am, I can usually find a place to walk. It is also a time to meditate and pray. I walk in the street for it is usually smoother. I look down to keep from tripping and to pick up anything that is useful or hazardous. Before I moved to the HEB area, I lived in Richardson and picked up aluminum cans for our local Mission Central.

When I moved to Euless I didn’t know of anyone needing cans, but realized I was seeing more coins along the way. Occasionally I saw a bill or so. The Lord made it clear early on that what I found should be given to Him, not put in my piggy bank.

So…I brought out my ancient coin holder to collect my pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. About the same time, the youth in our church began declaring Super Bowl Sunday the SouperBowl of Caring. Since then I have kept my collection of coins and bills from one SouperBowl to the next. When I was still working full time, I walked in the dark and am sure I missed some even though I carried a flashlight. During those years, I found anywhere from $4 to $6 dollars.

Now, just to be clear, found money means found money. If it comes in an unsolicited donation request in the mail, I double match the money, if I am not going to contribute. It may be in a purse I haven’t used in a long time. You get the picture!

This past year has been VERY different. I usually find 100 to 150 pennies throughout the year and now $10 to $15 total, since I take different routes each day. I was disappointed because I had not seen as much money as in past years. However, in late fall I found $10 in a thank you note from Nielson TV poll for answering their short poll. I set it aside. Then one morning I walked in a shopping center parking lot and found a wadded $20 which went into my collection. Finally, just 10 days before SouperBowl Sunday, I found two $20s in the gutter. I even checked to make sure they were not counterfeit. Long story short, I contributed $76 and change this year!

My challenge to you?…Save your found money. Let’s see who finds the most! It is all for a great cause!
