Peace Be With You

by Rev. Johnru Villamor on December 27, 2022

Through the busyness of this season and with all the challenges and uncertainties of the world, how can true peace be experienced?

Without a doubt, we all wish for shalom. For some, shalom means physical and mental well-being; for others, it means the absence of war, disease, and injustice; and for others, it can be a beautiful sunrise or sunset. For me, shalom is being safe and stress-free.

However, in the Bible, shalom means more than that. God's vision for the world is shalom. God loves humankind and is on a mission to restore it. Since the fall of humanity, it has been God’s will to make all things right.

Our ultimate destination is shalom. Through Jesus Christ, God is restoring and reconciling all things to God. Because of Jesus's birth, life, death, and resurrection, we can experience and continue to hope for God's shalom.

“For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.” (Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭19‬-‭20‬, NRSV‬‬)

Having a relationship with Jesus as our Lord and Savior allows us to experience God's peace because God instills it within us.

May we pursue shalom with others while we all await the complete restoration of the world. Our peace with and from God gives us the power and grace to maintain peace, love, and unity with one another. We, the Church, are a sign that God's realm is here but not yet.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John‬ ‭14‬:‭27‬, NRSV‬‬)
